2011 CONCACAF Gold CUP: Panama beats El Salvador in PK 5-3, advances to Semifinals

2011 Concacaf Gold Cup LogoPanama advances to the Semifinals of the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup by beating El Salvador 5-3 in penalty shootout after a 1-1 Full Time and extra time count.

Panama and El Salvador needed penalty kicks to decide their Gold Cup quarterfinal on Sunday after a 90th-minute goal equalized for “Los Canaleros”.

Rodolfo Zelaya broke a scoreless tie late in the second half by penalty kick on the 78th minute. Panama’s Luis Carlos Tejada scored an equalizer on the 90th.

Both teams played the extra periods with 10 men after Panama’s Blas Perez and El Salvador’s Luis Anaya were sent off during the intermission after getting into a scuffle.

Panama will face United States in the semifinals on Wednesday in Houston.
