No. 5 seed Sharapova takes on No. 8 seed Kvitova Saturday July 2, 2011 in the Wimbledon 2011 Women’s Singles Finals match.

First-time Grand Slam finalist and eighth-seeded Petra Kvitova will face former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova in the finals after beating Azarenka, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 in the semifinals.

In the other semifinals, The fifth-seeded Sharapova, who won the first of her three Grand Slam titles at the All England Club in 2004, overcame 13 double-faults to beat Sabine Lisicki 6-4, 6-3.

Kvitova is a back-to-back Wimbledon semifinalist while Sharapova is a proven finalist (she’s 3-1 in Grand Slam finals).

(Source: ESPN) Petra Kvitova won her first Grand Slam title Saturday by beating Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-4 in the Wimbledon final.

Kvitova was playing in her first major final, but it was three-time Grand Slam champion Sharapova that showed her nerves.

The 2004 Wimbledon champion double-faulted six times, including twice to get broken to 4-2 in the first set.

The 21-year-old Kvitova is the first left-handed woman to win the Wimbledon title since Martina Navratilova in 1990.
