Andy Murray beats Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to advance to the Wimbledon 2010 Semifinals
Britain’s Andy Murray has beaten Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in four sets to reach the Wimbledon semifinals for the second year in a row.
The fourth-seeded Murray beat the 10th-seeded Frenchman 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 6-2, 6-2 on Wednesday. He dropped his first set of the tournament as the first half of the match was a tense affair for the Scot.
10th-seeded Frenchman Tsonga left Murray’s dipping return which landed on the line at 5-5 in the second tiebreak and allowed him to go on and take the set. After that, Murray did not look back and took the match with a ferocious cross court forehand.
Andy Murray will face second-seeded Rafael Nadal in the semifinals, after beating Soderling in 4 sets 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-1.
Murray is bidding to become the first British player to win the men’s title at Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936. The last British man to reach the final was Bunny Austin in 1938.
Murray on his quarter-final victory: “I was having to hang in there and I played a lot better in the last two sets. Had to do a lot of defending but I turned it around.” Andy says he’s looking forward to his fifth Grand Slam meeting with world No.1 Nadal on Friday. “It’ll be a great match. Played against him four times in Grand Slams and it’s 2-all so it should be a good one.”
