2011 Wimbledon Men’s Singles Finals: Rafael Nadal vs Novak Djokovic
No. 1 seed Rafael Nadal takes on No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic Sunday July 3, 2011 in the Wimbledon 2011 Men’s Singles Finals match.
Novak Djokovic reached the championship match for the first time by defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-7 (9), 6-3 in a match filled with diving shots by both players on Centre Court Friday night.
A few hours later, 10-time major winner Rafael Nadal knocked out Andy Murray 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 to keep the British fans waiting for a homegrown champion at the grass-court Grand Slam.
Novak Djokovic secured the No. 1 ranking by reaching the Wimbledon final on Friday, and he will get a chance to beat the man he is replacing—defending champion Rafael Nadal.
No matter Sunday’s Nadal-Djokovic result, the Spaniard will be overtaken in the ATP rankings Monday by two-time Australian Open champion Djokovic, who’ll rise from No. 2.
Novak Djokovic improved his 2011 winnings record to 47-1.
