AFC – New York Jets vs Cincinnati Bengals Preview
Cincinnati must show its toughness and aim to recover from its ugly loss last week. For the second straight week, the Bengals will face cold conditions, a mauling offensive line and the top defense in the league as they host the Jets in a wild-card matchup Saturday afternoon.
Lewis knew there was a chance Cincinnati (10-6) would play New York (9-7) again in the postseason, so he had his offensive and defensive coordinators stick with basic game plans Sunday night. Still, the AFC North champion Bengals didn’t expect to be outplayed so thoroughly, losing 37-0 against a Jets team that needed a victory to secure a playoff spot.
Running back Cedric Benson was rested, but Cincinnati played the rest of its starters on offense until the game was out of reach. It finished with a franchise-worst 72 yards—none passing—against New York, which leads the NFL in scoring defense (14.8 points per game) and total defense (252.3 yards per game).
Defensively, the Bengals were just as bad, surrendering 257 yards rushing. The Jets, with center Nick Mangold and left guard Alan Faneca going to the Pro Bowl, are averaging an NFL-best 172.2 yards on the ground.
Cincinnati, outmatched physically in frigid conditions at the Meadowlands, must quickly find a way to bounce back as it returns home with temperatures expected to be in the low 20s.
The Jets have won seven of their last eight matchups with the Bengals, and won the teams’ only playoff meeting 44-17 in the first round Jan. 9, 1983.
Last time the two teams met was just last week, the regular-season final game wherein the Jets beat up on the Bengals, 37-0, at home. Of all the blowout games in the final week — and all of those with rematches coming up in the wild-card round — this was by far the ugliest. The Jets pummeled a Bengals team with limited motivation from the opening snap. Bengals QB Carson Palmer completed just 1 of 11 passes for zero yards and an interception, completing a second-half of the season slide in which the Bengals could not muster any downfield thrust. The Jets, one of the elite running teams in the NFL, scored four rushing touchdowns, and rookie QB Mark Sanchez, still very raw, completed just eight passes for 63 yards in the victory. Game Recap
Sanchez Flawless, Jets beat Bengals 24-14.
With their rookie quarterback playing mistake-free, the New York Jets turned their surprising playoff appearance into a long-running production.
Mark Sanchez handled single-degree wind chills and the playoff pressure with no problems Saturday, throwing a touchdown pass on a rollout play, and the NFL’s top running game took it from there, setting up a 24-14 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Sanchez went 12 of 15 for 182 yards, becoming the fourth rookie quarterback since 1950 to start and win a playoff game. Third-round pick Shonn Greene ran for 135 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown, as the Jets’ rookies made plays under the biggest pressure. (Source)
