New York Giants (7-6) vs Washington Redskins (4-9) Preview

The struggling New York Giants’ latest defeat cost them any realistic chance of winning the NFC East, but they could still be in good position to reach the playoffs if they take care of business against seemingly inferior competition.

Lately, however, the Washington Redskins haven’t been an easy opponent for anyone, and they could provide a major test for the visiting Giants and their reeling defense as the division rivals clash on Monday night.

New York’s defense, which was the NFL’s best during the team’s 5-0 start, has been uncharacteristically soft since, although coach Tom Coughlin gave first-year defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan a vote of confidence this week.

A dominating defense was what led the Giants on their Super Bowl run two seasons ago, and the unit was again one of the best in the league last year as New York went 12-4 to earn the top seed in the NFC.

The Redskins (4-9) could be a dangerous opponent after showing some major improvement the last five weeks. While they are 2-3 in that stretch, they nearly pulled off upsets against Dallas, Philadelphia and New Orleans.

The two teams last met in Week 1 wherein a defensive touchdown from Osi Umenyiora keyed a 23-17 victory for the Giants. Last week in NFL  Week 14, New York’s defense was completely over matched in a 45-38 loss to Philadelphia while Washington blew out host Oakland, 34-13.

Game Recap

The New York Giants kept themselves in the postseason/playoff hunt Monday night with a 45-12 rout of the Washington Redskins.

The Giants were efficient and dominant in one of the most lopsided victories in the long, storied series against their NFC East rival. New York led 24-0 at halftime and scored on six of its first seven possessions.

Eli Manning completed 19 of 26 passes for 268 yards and three touchdowns. Ahmad Bradshaw ran for two scores.

New York improved to 8-6, one game behind Dallas and Green Bay in the battle for wild-card spots with two weeks left in the season.

The Redskins fell to 4-10 and failed to make a good first impression in front of new general manager Bruce Allen, who was hired Thursday in a front-office shake-up. (Source: Yahoo! Sports)
