Denver Broncos vs Philadelphia Eagles
When: Sunday, December 27, 2009 4:15 PM ET.
Venue: Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, PA.

Denver Broncos (8-6) vs Philadelphia Eagles (10-4) Preview

Brian Dawkins became one of Philadelphia’s most beloved athletes during a 13-year career with the Eagles. Dawkins will make his much-anticipated return to the City of Brotherly Love on Sunday wearing his familiar No. 20 with the Denver Broncos when they take on the playoff-bound Eagles.

Philadelphia (10-4) opted not to bring back the seven-time Pro Bowl safety after last season, causing angry fans to voice their displeasure with the loss of a player whose popularity surpassed any Eagle in recent memory. Drafted with the last pick of the second round in 1996, Dawkins quickly became the stalwart of a secondary that helped Philadelphia reach five NFC championship games.

The Broncos (8-6) will have their defense introduced before Sunday’s game, giving the notoriously tough Philadelphia crowd a chance to shower Dawkins with affection.

While letting Dawkins leave became a major issue locally, the Eagles have moved on well without him and are the hottest team in the NFC with five straight wins. Philadelphia clinched its eighth playoff berth in 10 years with last week’s 27-13 win over San Francisco.

Dawkins has made a huge difference on a Denver defense that was fourth-worst in the NFL last season. Dawkins has turned in a Pro Bowl-caliber season with 100 tackles to help the Broncos’ defensive unit rise to No. 3 in the league.

Philadelphia can win the NFC East with a victory coupled with a loss by Dallas to Washington on Sunday night. Denver (8-6), meanwhile, currently holds one of two wild-card spots in the AFC and can ensure a postseason berth by winning its final two games.

The two last met in Week 8 of  the 2005 Season wherein Jake Plummer passed for 309 yards and four touchdown to lead the Broncos past the Eagles, 49-21. Last week in NFL Week 15, Philadelphia won its fifth straight with a 27-13 victory over San Francisco while Denver dropped a 20-19 decision to Oakland on a last-minute TD by Chaz Schilens.

So, let’s all wait and watch Broncos vs Eagles live Sunday Afternoon.

Game Recap

No matter how hard he tried, Brian Dawkins couldn’t will the Denver Broncos to victory in his emotional return to Philadelphia.

David Akers kicked a 28-yard field goal with 4 seconds remaining, lifting the Eagles to a 30-27 victory over the Broncos on Sunday.

Kyle Orton rallied the Broncos from a 27-10 deficit in the third quarter, but Donovan McNabb led the Eagles on a winning drive in the final minutes.

Rookie wide receiver Jeremy Maclin set up Akers’ kick with an outstanding, 27-yard catch along the sideline to the Broncos 13. The catch initially was ruled incomplete, but it was overturned after replays showed Maclin kept both feet inbound while making a diving reception.

Three plays later, Akers nailed a gimme. (Source: Yahoo! Sports)
