US Open 2009 - Roger Federer vs Robin SoderlingUS Open 2009: Roger Federer vs Robin Soderling

Roger Federer will play Sweden Robin Soderling in the quarterfinals of 2009 US Open. This will be for a spot in the semifinals. The match will be played at Arthur Ashe Stadium and will begin after the completion of the Women’s Singles Quarterfinal match between Melanie Oudin and Caroline Wozniacki.

It was Roger Federer that knocked Robin Soderling out of Wimbledon in the round of 16 and it was also Federer that won the French Open final by beating Soderling at Roland Garros. Soderling has been exceptional in his quest, he has beaten Davydenko twice (in the French and this 2009 US Open), he beat Fernando Gonzalez in the French semis, and of course, Soderling was the man that ended Rafael Nadal’s winning streak at Roland Garros.

Unfortunately for Soderling and for fans that prefer competitive tennis, Federer has owned Soderling in heads up play 11-0. So, exactly what does Soderling do to stop his 11-match losing streak against Federer?

The only thing that might redeem Soderling in his match against Federer is that he should be very fresh. A reason for that is that two of his four victories at the US Open this year have been as a result of retirements. Instead of having to really earn victories by bending over to return shots or digging down deep for energy in important points, Soderling, twice, has simply been handed victory (although it should be said that he was either up a set or a break in both matches).

Or, only an off day by the Swiss will prevent his 12th victory, but if Soderling can crowd the net more, take some appropriate risks off Federer’s second serves, he will have a chance.

But, Soderling already concedes that he only has a small chance in this match, which is no way to approach a Grand Slam quarterfinal, but he’s likely correct.

Game time is at 8:45 p.m. ET September 9, 2009 in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

UPDATE: Roger Federer has beaten Robin Soderling to reach a 22nd consecutive Grand Slam semifinal. Federer improved to 12-0 against the 12th-seeded Soderling by winning 6-0, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (6) Wednesday night. Federer has won 39 consecutive matches at the American Grand Slam tournament, where he is trying to become the first man since Bill Tilden in the 1920s to win six titles in a row. In Saturday’s semifinals, Federer will play No. 4 Novak Djokovic. Federer beat Djokovic in the 2007 final and 2008 semifinals at Flushing Meadows.
