Pacman, Yahoo Sports Best Pound-for-Pound

Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, for the third straight month, is the clear choice as the world’s finest pound-for-pound boxer in the monthly Yahoo! Sports poll. His last fight was a TKO win in round 9 over David Diaz last June 28, 2008. But an old nemesis, Juan Manuel Marquez, is now nipping at the Filipino’s heels and is following Pacman’s steps in the lightweight division. Pacquiao retained his top spot by garnering 18 of the 23 first-place votes cast from the blue-ribbon panel of boxing writers and broadcasters from around the world. Update: Manny Pacquiao Wins – 9th round Knockout

Dubbed as Lethal Combination, newly crowned WBC super featherweight champion Manny Pacquiao and WBC lightweight champion David Diaz will battle in a 12-round bout with David Diaz’s Lightweight (135 pounds) title and belt at stake. Pacquiao vs Diaz fight will take place on Saturday night, June 28, 2008 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, Las Vegas NV. It will be Sunday morning on June 29, 2008 in the Philippines. It is promoted by Top Rank in association with MP Promotions and will be produced and distributed live by HBO PayPerView beginning at 9 PM ET / 6 PM PT.

Pacquiao quoted, “This will be my hardest-fought battle. It’s been over three years since I have changed weight divisions and I will be doing it against the lightweight division’s world champion. I saw how he took the fight to Erik Morales in his last title defense and I’m expecting to see the same firepower out of him when we meet. But this is my drive for five. Five world titles in five different weight classes and I will not be denied. I am fighting for history, for destiny and for my people of the Philippines.
