Initially set for last July 18, 2009 but the former pound-for-pound king Mayweather, who is coming out of a brief retirement, damaged cartilage in his ribs in his training that forced a postponement. The 2 fighters committed to rescheduled it for September 19, 2009.  The fight will now take place in conjunction with Mexican Independence Day, traditionally a big boxing weekend. Mayweather has been cleared by doctors to fight Juan Manuel Marquez next month at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The showdown between Floyd Mayweather Jr. (39-0, 25 KO’s) and Juan Manuel Marquez (50-4-1, 37 KO’s) is promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions in association with Marquez Promotions.

The fight will be at a catch weight of about 143 pounds, eight more than Marquez has ever fought and the lightest Mayweather has been since 2005.

I am relieved to be cleared to fight, as I was already looking forward to getting back in the ring,” Mayweather said. “Trust me, September 19 is a great weekend for boxing, and all of my fans — of which there are many Mexicans too — can certainly hold on to their hats and sombreros when I get back into the ring.

That’s right. I’m back and you can all get ready for another chapter of the Mayweather experience!” said Mayweather. “I told my CEO Leonard Ellerbe from the start that I wanted to come back fighting the best fighters out there and Juan Manuel Marquez is one of the best in boxing today.

To be considered the best in the world, you have to fight the best, and I have made it clear even when Mayweather was away from the sport that he was the only man I really wanted to fight,” said Marquez. “I’m happy that he’s come out of retirement and accepted my challenge. Unfortunately for him he might be sorry he came back at all.

Marquez vs Mayweather Preview

Mayweather hasn’t fought since knocking out Ricky Hatton in December 2007, when he was still reveling in his breakthrough victory over De La Hoya. His unexpected retirement last year came in a statement issued by his publicist, just as he was gaining mainstream attention with appearances on “Dancing with the Stars” and at Wrestle Mania.

Mayweather’s popularity seemed to have dimmed over the past year and there have been reports that Mayweather (39-0, 25 KOs) has been having financial hardships. And Also, On top of that, Pacquiao has risen to become boxing’s pound-for-pound and best all-around fighter.

His handlers began fielding offers for fights several months ago — few believed that Mayweather would stay retired — and he eventually settled on Marquez, who insiders rank highly on the pound-for-pound list but who is unknown by most mainstream sports fans.

The same bragging mouth of Mayweather Jr. is still dominating in his every interview. He is not really convinced that Pacquiao is the best fighter of all time. He claims that he has never been lost ever and the fighter that can produce millions in every fight. This fight against Marquez will be the triggering bout for the coming future Pacquiao vs Mayweather match, if ever he wins this September fight in which Marquez is also eager to fight again Pacquiao for the 3rd time.

Marquez (50-4-1, 37 KOs), who has fought to a draw in 2004 and close split-decision loss in 2008 against Pacquiao, is coming off riveting knockout of Joel Casamayor in 2008 and the first fighter to knock out former unified lightweight champion Juan Diaz, which earned him the vacant WBO lightweight title in February 2009.
