No. 1 seed Rafael Nadal takes on No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic Sunday July 3, 2011 in the Wimbledon 2011 Men’s Singles Finals match.

Novak Djokovic reached the championship match for the first time by defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-7 (9), 6-3 in a match filled with diving shots by both players on Centre Court Friday night.

A few hours later, 10-time major winner Rafael Nadal knocked out Andy Murray 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 to keep the British fans waiting for a homegrown champion at the grass-court Grand Slam.

Novak Djokovic secured the No. 1 ranking by reaching the Wimbledon final on Friday, and he will get a chance to beat the man he is replacing—defending champion Rafael Nadal.

French Open 2011: Novak Djokovic beats Juan Martin del Potro for his 42nd straight win and advances to the 4th round of the French Open

2nd-seed Novak Djokovic beat No. 25 Juan Martin del Potro 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 Saturday in the French Open’s third round to stretch his winning streak to 42 matches.

The match was suspended because of darkness after the second set Friday night.

Djokovic is 40-0 in 2011, the second-best start to a season in the Open era, which began in 1968. He also won his last two matches of 2010, making his overall run tied for the third-longest, behind Guillermo Vilas’ record of 46 in a row in 1977.

Bidding for his third Grand Slam title — and first at Roland Garros — Djokovic will play No. 13 Richard Gasquet of France next.

Del Potro was a French Open semifinalist in 2009, and won the U.S. Open later that year.

Rafael Nadal breezed into the fourth round, regaining his dominant form by dispatching Croatian qualifier Antonio Veic 6-1, 6-3, 6-0.

The five-time champion at Roland Garros needed five sets to win his opening match, and was then pushed to tiebreaker in the deciding third set of his next match.

But against Veic, Nadal had only 18 unforced errors and managed to break his opponent nine times.

Andy Murray also moved into the next round despite an injury scare in the second set when he twisted his right ankle.

He eventually beat Michael Berrer 6-2, 6-3, 6-2.

Nadal has been dominant at Roland Garros since his debut in 2005, when he won the first of four straight titles. His only loss at the clay-court Grand Slam came in 2009, when he was defeated by Robin Soderling in the fourth round.

But Nadal started off slowly this year, needing five sets to beat John Isner. In the second round, Nadal looked shaky in defeating Pablo Andujar 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (4).

On Court Suzanne Lenglen, Murray was playing Berrer when he twisted his right ankle and dropped to the ground in pain.

The fourth-seeded Brit called for a trainer and had his ankle taped before returning to the court and breaking his German opponent on the next point.

Murray will next play Viktor Troicki of Serbia, who beat No. 21 Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

French Open 2011: Rafael Nadal easily beats Antonio Veic to advance to the 4th round of the French Open

Five-times champion Rafa Nadal was his old merciless self as he silenced Croatian qualifier Antonio Veic 6-1 6-3 6-0 to book his place in the fourth round of the French Open Saturday.

The Spanish number one allowed only seven points to his opponent in the opening set despite struggling on his first serve.

Nadal, who now has a 41-1 record at Roland Garros although he labored through his first two matches this year, ran into a spot of bother in the second set, conceding a couple of breaks.

However, a series of bludgeoning forehands floored world number 227 Veic, who beat twice French Open semi-finalist Nikolay Davydenko in the previous round, in a 25-minute second set.

Nadal will now meet either Croatian Ivan Ljubicic or Spanish 16th seed Fernando Verdasco for a place in the last eight.

No. 3 seed Kim Clijsters takes on No. 9 seed Li Na for the Australian Open 2011 Women’s Final match at the Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia. Game time is scheduled to start at 16:30 (Melbourne) Saturday January 29, 2011.

27-year-old U.S. Open Champion Kim Clijsters cruised into the Australian Open final after beating No. 2-ranked Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-3 — repeating the result of their U.S. Open final last year. Clijsters was the only Grand Slam winner to qualify for the semifinals.

In the other semifinal match, 28-year-old China’s Li Na overcame and upset top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki to become the first Chinese player to reach the championship match at a Grand Slam. Li rallied to win the first of the women’s semifinals 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 on Thursday, saving match point when Wozniacki was serving at 5-4 in the second set.

Clijsters is 4-2 against Li, but the Chinese girl has won two of the past three, including the recent final in Sydney.

“Li Na makes history entering the Australian Open final” read the front page of the Beijing News. Inside, the tabloid ran almost two pages of coverage on Li’s semifinal upset over top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki.

The WTA expects Li’s success to help spur the growth of tennis in China.

GAME RECAP

Kim Clijsters won her second straight Grand Slam title and the fourth of her career, struggling early before beating Li Na 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 Saturday in the 2011 Australian Open final.

The result ended the outstanding run of Li, who became the first Chinese player to reach a Grand Slam singles final.

Li appeared to become upset with some of the Chinese spectators in the crowd in the third set, and asked the chair umpire to intervene. She later complained about the flashes from photographers at center court.

U.S. Open champion Clijsters’ win came in her likely last appearance at Melbourne Park — she said that 2011 could be her last full year on the tour.

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal takes on No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic Sunday afternoon 4:00PM ET September 12, 2010 for the US Open 2010 Men’s Final match at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, Flushing Meadows, New York.

Rafael Nadal easily beat Mikhail Youzhny in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 in their semifinal match Saturday. Nadal is now just one victory away from earning his first career Grand Slam.

Nadal will be bidding to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in the same season. The 24-year-old Spaniard also can become the seventh man in tennis history to own at least one championship from each Grand Slam tournament.

In the other semifinal match, Novak Djokovic advances to the final upsetting and defeating No. 2 seed Roger Federer in 5 thrilling sets 5-7, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.

Sunday’s final will have, coincidentally, the 22nd career meeting between Djokovic and Nadal, one of whom will become a U.S. Open champion for the first time.

UPDATE: Nadal tops Djokovic 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 for the 2010 US Open title, completes career Slam.

Game Recap

NEW YORK — Chasing his first U.S. Open championship, Rafael Nadal was so dominant, so determined, so defiant, his face curling into a sneer with every wallop of the ball.

With two marvelous weeks at Flushing Meadows capped by victory in a thrilling final Monday night, Nadal fashioned an emphatic answer to all those questions about whether he could grab the only major trophy missing from his collection.

Now owner of a career Grand Slam at age 24, champion at three consecutive major tournaments and nine overall, the No. 1-ranked Nadal is suddenly chasing something else: recognition as the greatest tennis player in history.

Approaching perfection for stretches — the guy played more than 40 points in a row without making an unforced error — Nadal beat Novak Djokovic 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 in a match filled with fantastic shotmaking by both men and interrupted by a thunderstorm a day after it was postponed by rain.

“For the first time in my career, I played a very, very good match in this tournament,” said Nadal, who never had been past the semifinals at Flushing Meadows. “That’s my feeling, no? I played my best match in the U.S. Open at the most important moment.”

Once seen as Roger Federer’s nemesis, Nadal has made his own greatness quite clear — and is more than halfway to Federer’s career record of 16 Grand Slam titles. Nadal’s total already is one more than Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi or Ivan Lendl won.

It’s clear where Nadal stands on the matter. He said “talk about if I am better or worse than Roger is stupid, because the titles say he’s much better than me.”

Djokovic, understandably, had a different take on Nadal.

“He has the capabilities already now to become the best player ever,” said Djokovic, who lost the 2007 U.S. Open final to Federer, but upset him in Saturday’s semifinals. “I think [Nadal is] playing the best tennis that I’ve ever seen him play on hard courts. He has improved his serve drastically — the speed, the accuracy. And, of course, his baseline [game] is as good as ever.”

Nadal is a year younger than Federer was when he got to No. 9, and about 3½ years younger than Federer was when he completed his career Grand Slam at the 2009 French Open. Nadal is the seventh man in history with at least one title from each of tennis’ four most important tournaments.

Bjorn Borg was the only other man to have nine major championships by 24.

“It’s too far; 16, for me, is too far to think about right now,” Nadal said, with his typical humility. “My goal, all my life, was the same: keep improving.”

The Belgian mother charmed the New York crowds last year when she celebrated an unlikely victory by fooling around with her infant daughter Jada on the centre court.

Clijsters has won the hearts of the crowds again this year, despite reaching Saturday’s final at the expense of the last American left standing in the singles draw, Venus Williams.

The 27-year-old came from behind to win 4-6 7-6 6-4 against Venus Williams on Friday and will play Vera Zvonereva in the final after the Russian upset Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki 6-4 6-3.

She is sure to be the favourite both the oddsmakers and the spectators in the stands.

She was a finalist at the U.S. Open in 2004 then won the title in 2005. She missed the next three years, first through injury then after taking a break to start a family, before winning on her return in 2009.

Her winning streak now stands at 20 matches and the crowds have been lapping it up. It is as though her fairytale run to the title last year is being played out all over again.

The former world number one knows, however, that sentiment plays no part in professional tennis and her Russian opponent is dangerous, despite never having won a major title.

This year Zvonareva played her first grand slam final at Wimbledon and she has not dropped a set so far at Flushing Meadows. More worryingly for Clijsters, Zvonareva has won their last two clashes, both this year, after losing the first five.

The seventh-seeded Zvonareva is not only one of the most improved players on the women’s tour, she is also one of the smartest. She combines her playing career with studying for a double degree and has learnt her lessons on the court as much as off it.

Although she has won their two most recent clashes, Zvonareva remains wary of the more experienced Clijsters.

UPDATE: Kim Clijsters crushes Vera Zvonareva in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 Saturday to win her 3rd US Open Women’s Singles Title. The defending champion Belgian overwhelmed the 7th-seeded Russian in a one-sided final Match.

2nd-seed Roger Federer will play against 3rd-seed Novak Djokovic for a spot in the US Open 2010 Men’s Singles Finals. The match will be played at 3:00 pm ET Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Flushing Meadows, New York.

Djokovic has made it this far for the fourth U.S. Open in a row, and he keeps running into 16-time Grand Slam champion Federer. Djokovic lost to him in the final in 2007, and in the semifinals in 2008 and 2009, when Federer hit his back-to-the-net, between-the-legs passing shot winner. Federer has a 10-5 career record against Djokovic.

Federer will be playing in his seventh consecutive U.S. Open semifinal. He won the other six, and has won 45 of 46 matches in New York since the start of the 2004 tournament. The only loss in that span came against del Potro in the 2009 title match.

Djokovic booked a berth opposite Swiss second seed Federer in Saturday’s US Open semi-finals by ousting French 17th seed Gael Monfils 7-6 (7/2), 6-1, 6-2 Wednesday while Federer beat Swedish fifth seed Robin Soderling 6-4, 6-4, 7-5.

Federer, a 16-time Grand Slam champion seeking his seventh US Open final in a row, and Nadal were the only players to reach the quarter-finals without dropping a set, the Spaniard making it without surrendering a service break.

UPDATE: 3rd-seed Novak Djokovic upsets 2nd-seed Roger Federer in 5 sets 5-7, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 to book a date with Rafael Nadal in Sunday’s 2010 U.S. Open final. Novak Djokovic foiled the mega-match that the people were pining for.
