Andre Ward (24-0-0, 13 KOs) advanced to the final by rolling through each of his tournament bouts in dominant fashion. He won his title against Kessler in his opening bout, scoring a dominant 11th-round technical decision. Ward, then shredded Allan Green for a shutout decision in his second bout. Ward’s Group Stage 3 bout called off when Dirrell, his 2004 U.S. Olympic teammate, dropped out of the tournament. Ward instead faced contender Sakio Bika outside of the tournament and won a lopsided decision. In his May semifinal fight, Ward routed Abraham in a lopsided decision to advance to the final.

Carl Froch (28-1-0, 20 KOs) edged Dirrell on a split decision in England in his opening-round bout. Then Froch lost a decision (and his title) in a slugfest to Denmark’s Kessler in Denmark in Group Stage 2. However, after Kessler dropped out, Froch met Abraham for the vacant belt in Group Stage 3 and won a near-shutout decision to claim his title. Froch advanced to the final in June by scoring a majority decision against Johnson.

KHAN-PETERSON FIGHT RECAP

It’s a candidate for fight of the year, one that will certainly be upset of the year. Lamont Peterson scored a 12 round split decision over Amir Khan in an all out slugfest. Scores of the bout were 113-112 twice, and 111-114.

Khan knocked Peterson down in the first round, but was deducted a point in the 7th for pushing, and the 12th for hitting on the break, which ultimately cost him the fight. Both fighters gave as much as they took, with the crowd in the Washington DC Convention Center on their feet for the duration of the fight.

Peterson was the aggressor during the bout, and didn’t back down to the speed and power of Khan. With the hometown crowd cheering him on every round, Peterson came into the fight as an 11/1 underdog, and refused to back down, as his hometown fans cheered as loud as they could with every punch landed.

Both fighters were hurt in the fight, but both fighters refused to back down, almost as if they were feeding off the crowds energy. Khan and Peterson put their heart and soul into the 12 rounds and left all they had in the ring, and despite the decision, it’s a fight that will be remembered more for the action, than who won the fight.

Nobody, outside those in his corner, expected Peterson to give the performance he gave, and it left all those in attendance clamoring for a rematch.

With the win, Peterson claims the WBA and IBF 140lb titles, and improves to 30-1-1 (15), while Khan drops to 26-2 (18). (via fightnews)

Pacquiao edges Marquez again

WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38 KOs) won a close twelve round majority decision over nemesis and three-division world champion Juan Manuel Márquez (53-6-1, 39 KOs) on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Tactical early rounds, but things heated up in the fourth. Good round for Marquez in the fifth. Most rounds very close with both fighters having their moments, just like the first two fights. Pacman suffered a vertical cut over the right eye in the tenth from an unintentional headbutt. The last two rounds were close.

In the end scores were 114-114, 115-113, 116-112. The Pacquiao-Marquez trilogy now stands at 2-0-1 for Pacman.

Top Rank Inc. President Todd Duboef announced through his Twitter account that HBO Sports secured the distribution of the November 12 fight.

“After reviewing spectacular offers from HBO/TW and SHO/CBS, congrats to HBO/TW for securing distribution for Nov 12#boxing,” said Deboef.
Pacquiao’s most recent fight, a lopsided decision victory over Shane Mosley, was shown in CBS’ Showtime. Despite being criticized as a ‘boring’ fight, it earned the Filipino superstar the highest pay-per-view numbers of his career.

Michael Marley of Examiner.com earlier cited a source that Top Rank was likely to give its nod to HBO.

“They’ve gone back to HBO, nothing against Showtime, because for the trilogy bout with Marquez, HBO has come up with a superior offer,” the source told Marley.

Duboef reportedly likened it to great boxers making their return.

“In boxing we talk about great fighters coming back after a loss. Well, HBO came back just like a great fighter,” he was quoted as saying by ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael.

UPDATE: Pacquiao-Marquez III Boxing Fight to be shown in HBO PPV

All three judges scored the bout all to Pacquiao by lopsided scores: 119-108, 120-108 and 120-107. According to the pay-per-view broadcast, Pacquiao landed 100 more punches than Mosley did, 182 to 82, and threw more than twice as many punches, 552 to 260.

Although Mosley came out fighting hard in the earlier rounds but it was all Pacquiao busier from there on. Pacquiao decked Mosley in round three with a straight left hand to the head. Mosley went on a defensive mode much of the time.

Referee Kenny Bayless mistakenly credited Mosley with a knockdown in round ten after he threw Pacquiao to the deck, which served to wake Manny more than anything.

Pacquiao acknowledged after the fight that there was some disappointment among his fans that he couldn’t knock Mosley out, despite dominating him for 12 rounds.

“I tried my best for a good fight, to make people happy,” Pacquiao said. “In the middle rounds my legs got tight. I went to move but it was tight. … I have to work on my legs because my legs were hurt.”
