2011 MLB World Series Live on FOX plus Schedule and Results

The 2011 World Series will be the 107th edition of Major League Baseball’s championship series. The best-of-seven playoff will be played between the Texas Rangers, champions of the American League, and the St. Louis Cardinals, champions of the National League, and is set to begin on Wednesday, October 19, 2011.

The National League Champion St. Louis Cardinals will have Home-field advantage for the World Series as the National League won the 2011 All-Star Game, 5-1 last July 12, 2011. All of the 2011 World Series games will be televised on FOX.

After the long grind of a 162 games, the 2011 MLB Regular Season is now over. Postseason or Playoff Season is here and only eight (8) baseball teams are left standing as the first round of the playoffs is underway which started Friday, September 30, 2011. Wade Phillips, after 3 1/2 season as head coach, was replaced by offensive coordinator Jason Garrett on an interim basis. Defensive line coach Paul Pasqualoni was promoted to replace Phillips’ other role as defensive coordinator.

Jones entered the weekend not planning to make a move, but Sunday night’s 45-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers became the tipping point. It was the Cowboys’ fifth straight loss, dropping them to 1-7.

“The decision has been made to move forward with a new person in the head coaching position for the Dallas Cowboys,” Jones said during a Monday press conference.

This is the first time Dallas Cowboys have changed coaches in the middle of a season. Garrett becomes the first former Cowboys player to take over the job previously held by the likes of Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells.

“Obviously this is a very difficult decision for me, the team and our organization. We are grateful to Wade and his contributions to the Cowboys, leading us to two division titles in his first three seasons with the club,” Jones said. “We also clearly understand we are not where we want to be at this time and that’s an understatement.”

This is the Cowboys’ worst season since 1989 and among the worst in franchise history by record alone. It could go down as the worst-ever considering Dallas was coming off a division title and a playoff win, and was expected to contend for the Super Bowl that’ll be held at Cowboys Stadium.

The 63-year-old Phillips leaves with a 34-22 record over 4 1/2 seasons guiding the Cowboys. He also was 1-2 in the postseason. Dallas won the NFC East twice on his watch.

Phillips released a statement thanking the fans and the Jones family “for all of the support” and thanked his coaches and players “for their loyalty and dedication.”

The first game under Garrett will be at the New York Giants on Sunday.

Renteria hit a tiebreaking home run off Cliff Lee in the seventh, and Lincecum pitched three-hit ball over eight innings, allowing Nelson Cruz’s solo homer in the bottom half. Brian Wilson finished for his first Series save.

It was an overdue victory — the Giants last wore the crown in 1954, four years before they moved west. So much for a franchise that never quite got it done in October despite the likes of baseball giants Willie Mays, Barry Bonds and Juan Marichal. It’s November, and now new names stand tall in San Francisco.

World Series Game 5 this Monday night November 1, 2010 7:57PM ET will still be at the Rangers Ballpark and will be the last home field advantage of the Rangers as Game 6 & 7, if necessary, will shift back to AT&T Park. Cliff Lee is scheduled to start in Game 5 against Giants Tim Lincecum.

Situation before Game 5: Giants lead series 3-1

With the Giants leading the Series, 3-1, everything is at stake in Game 5. Tim Lincecum and the San Francisco Giants ended Cliff Lee’s amazing run of postseason dominance in Game 1 of the World Series. If Lincecum beats Lee again, the franchise will earn its first championship in 56 years.

Lincecum will try to help bring the first World Series title back to the Bay Area for the Giants on Monday night in Game 5 against Lee and the Texas Rangers.

These aces met in Game 1 at AT&T Park on Wednesday, and Lee entered the contest 7-0 with a 1.26 ERA in eight career postseason starts. The Rangers ace allowed seven runs over 4 2/3 innings in an 11-7 loss after yielding 12 runs over his previous 64 1/3 postseason innings.

Lincecum wasn’t at his best, but was good enough to earn the victory. He gave up four runs over 5 2/3 innings, improving to 3-1 with a 2.83 ERA in four postseason starts. The two-time reigning NL Cy Young Award winner expects to be better in his second chance against Texas.

Lincecum will have a tough time duplicating the effort of teammate Madison Bumgarner in Sunday’s 4-0 victory. Bumgarner dominated for eight innings, yielding three hits and striking out six as he and Buster Posey became the first rookie battery to start in the World Series since Spec Shea and Yogi Berra for the Yankees in 1947.

So, will San Francisco Giants get their 1st championship in 56 years or will Texas  Rangers extend the series for another game at the AT&T Park?

World Series Game 4 will still be at Texas this Sunday night October 31, 2010 8:20 PM ET at the Rangers Ballpark. Rangers Tommy Hunter to start in Game 4 and pitches against Giants Madison Bumgarner.

Situation before Game 4: Giants lead series 2-1

With the Giants leading 2-1 and the Rangers now back in the World Series picture, winning Game 3, 4-2, Texas have the chance now to tie the series at 2 games a piece as they will play Game 4 still in their home turf.

Texas struggled on the road in the first two games, allowing 20 runs and 22 hits. Colby Lewis helped slow down the Giants by allowing two runs over 7 2/3 innings in a 4-2 victory Saturday in the first World Series game in Arlington.

“I feel great,” manager Ron Washington said. “We wanted to get back home. We felt comfortable here. We knew we could finally put a good game together, and we did.”

“You know, the momentum, obviously we’re still down one game, but it’s shifted,” Hamilton said. “I mean, we’re at home, we’ve got the fans behind us. We’re right where we want to be.”

Rookie Mitch Moreland hit a three-run homer in the second inning to put Texas ahead for good.

GAME RECAP

Madison Bumgarner pitched a three-hitter over eight innings, Aubrey Huff and Buster Posey homered and the San Francisco beat the Texas Rangers 4-0 on Sunday night to take a 3-1 World Series lead and move within one win of the Giants’ first title since 1954.

Bumgarner, San Francisco’s 21-year-old No. 4 starter, didn’t allow a runner past second base. Brian Wilson finished with a hitless ninth for the Giants’ second shutout of the Series.

Huff hit a two-run homer in the third off loser Tommy Hunter, Andres Torres added an RBI double in the seventh against Darren Oliver and Posey homered in the eighth off Darren O’Day.

In Game 5 on Monday night, opening-game winner Tim Lincecum pitches for the Giants against Game 1 loser Cliff Lee.

World Series Game 3 now shifts to Arlington, Texas, Saturday night October 30, 2010 6:57 PM ET at the Rangers Ballpark. Colby Lewis starts for the Rangers against Giants Jonathan Sanchez.

Situation before Game 3: Giants lead series 2-0

With the Giants leading 2-0, the series now shifts to Texas as they will host the next 3 games (3, 4 & 5).

Texas down 2-0, the hitters are slumping, the bullpen is a wreck and the manager is being criticized. A team that did so well in the ALCS playoffs got battered 11-7 in the opener, then embarrassed 9-0 in Game 2.

“Now that we’re home, we feel comfortable back in this place. Not taking anything away from the Giants, they beat us soundly,” Texas manager Ron Washington said. “We’ve just got to come back here, get focused and win a game. We win a game, everything will be fine.”

Colby Lewis is set to start Game 3 Saturday night against Giants lefty Jonathan Sanchez. It will be the first Series game in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Lewis, who closed out the Yankees in the AL championship series, will try to stop San Francisco’s scoring spree. Texas has been tagged for 20 runs, the most allowed in a franchise’s first two World Series games. Colorado set the previous record of 15 runs in 2007.

Texas was one of baseball’s best home teams this year, the Giants were among the top road clubs. The Rangers also had been doing well on the road — 5-1 in the AL playoffs — before San Francisco stopped them.

GAME RECAP

Texas Rangers are back in the World Series. The Rangers, behind emerging October ace Colby Lewis, came home and threw themselves the biggest tailgate party of them all, beating San Francisco 4-2 Saturday night but still  trailing the Giants 2-1.

Rookie Mitch Moreland hit an early three-run homer, Josh Hamilton later launched a 426-foot shot and the Rangers posted a Series win that took the franchise 50 years to achieve.

Lewis took over after that. He worked around solo home runs by Cody Ross — the fifth of the postseason for the NL championship series MVP — in the seventh inning and Andres Torres in the eighth. The Giants eventually brought the tying run to the plate, but reliever Darren O’Day retired Buster Posey to end the eighth.

Washington finally brought in Neftali Feliz, and the rocket-armed closer pitched a perfect ninth for his first save of the postseason. Washington was criticized in the first two games at San Francisco for leaving Feliz in the bullpen while the Giants broke away.

Situation before Game 2: Giants lead series 1-0

San Francisco Giants took Game 1 of the best-of-seven 2010 World Series against the Rangers at the AT&T Park with an 11-7 score. Giants dominated and whacked the Rangers star Pitcher Cliff Lee in Game 1 Wednesday night.  Lee came into the game with a 7-0 record and a 1.26 ERA in postseason play. Texas gave him an early 2-0 lead, but the Giants swung things in their favor in a hurry.

Matt Cain pitched shutout ball into the eighth inning, Edgar Renteria hit a go-ahead home run and the San Francisco Giants broke away from the Texas Rangers 9-0 on Thursday night for a 2-0 lead in the World Series.

A day after the Giants romped 11-7, Cain ruled the mound. He kept his 0.00 ERA through three postseason starts.

The Giants scored seven runs in the eighth, their biggest postseason inning ever. Texas relievers walked four straight batters with two outs.

Renteria homered off C.J. Wilson in the fifth inning for a 1-0 lead. He added a two-run single in the wild eighth. By the end, the crowd chanted “Sweep! Sweep!”

In the Year of the Pitcher, you must also have the Postseason of the Pitcher. October 2010 has followed the script, right into the World Series.

Game 1 of the Fall Classic on Wednesday night at AT&T Park will fittingly offer Tim Lincecum of the San Francisco Giants against Cliff Lee of the Texas Rangers.

For the record, Lincecum is a two-time National League Cy Young Award winner and Lee is currently the dominant postseason pitcher, with a record of 7-0 and a 1.26 ERA over the last two postseasons.

Pitching becomes even more paramount every October, but this postseason has been a festival of superior pitching and splendid pitching matchups. Roy Halladay’s no-hitter for the Phillies in the NL Division Series against the Reds set the appropriate tone.

Lee was matched against Rays ace David Price in Game 1 of the American League Division Series and won. Lee was matched against Price again in the decisive Game 5 of the ALDS and won again. Then in Game 3 of the ALCS, Lee was matched against Andy Pettitte of the Yankees, the all-time leader in postseason victories with 19. Lee produced a postseason gem — eight shutout innings, two hits, one walk and 13 strikeouts — against baseball’s leading offense. He would have gone in Game 7 of the ALCS, but the Rangers had the good sense to win in six, thus making Lee available for another Game 1 start.

The Giants stopped a very good Phillies offense to get here. The Rangers stopped an even better Yankees offense to get here. San Francisco has a 2.47 ERA in this postseason. Texas has a 2.76 ERA.

So it is no surprise when the Game 1 focus has been primarily on the pitchers. Even Lee, when asked what is dangerous about the Giants, did not do the traditional “every Major Leaguer with a bat in his hands is dangerous,” and instead honestly focused upon San Francisco’s pitchers.

Game 1 of the World Series will have the focus right where it ought to be for a game of this significance — on the starting pitchers. Lincecum and Lee, two of the game’s best, are going. The Year of the Pitcher has a maximum of seven games left, and this is exactly how it should conclude.  (Source: MLB)

The San Francisco Giants turned the World Series opener into an extra long round of batting practice — against Cliff Lee and the Texas Rangers.

Freddy Sanchez sprayed balls down the lines. Cody Ross and Aubrey Huff hit line drives up the middle. Juan Uribe launched a shot far, far over the wall.

So much for the unbeatable Mr. Lee. The Giants battered him and the bullpen, with Sanchez hitting three doubles and keying a six-run burst in an 11-7 romp Wednesday night that looked even more lopsided.

What shaped up as a pitchers’ duel between Tim Lincecum and Lee quickly deteriorated into a rout. By the end, the Rangers played like the World Series rookies they are — they made four errors, Ian Kinsler took a mistaken turn around first base and manager Ron Washington may have waited too late to pull his ace.

Former Giants slugger Barry Bonds had plenty to cheer for from his seat next to the San Francisco dugout, especially when a tie game suddenly became an 8-2 thumping in the fifth inning. Rangers president and part-owner Nolan Ryan sat there glumly in a suit and tie, his prized pitcher a wreck.

Added up, the Giants improved to 10-0 against Texas at AT&T Park. Showers are in the forecast for Game 2 on Thursday night when Matt Cain and his 0.00 ERA in two playoff start takes on C.J. Wilson and the Rangers.

Game 6 Preview

Roy Oswalt is right at home — pitching as a starter in a ballpark where he’s never lost. Back in a familiar role after an unsuccessful guest appearance as a reliever, Oswalt gets the ball for Game 6 on Saturday when the Phillies try to even the NL championship series against San Francisco.

Oswalt dominated the Giants in Game 2, but took the loss when he came out of the bullpen and allowed Juan Uribe’s game-ending sacrifice fly in the ninth inning in Game 4.

Roy Halladay helped the Phillies avoid elimination with a gutsy effort pitching through a groin pull Thursday night, sending the series back to Philadelphia with the Giants ahead 3-2.

Now it’s Oswalt’s turn. He’s 10-0 lifetime at Citizens Bank Park.

“Numbers, to me, are no big deal,” Oswalt said. “I didn’t want to get the loss for sure. But you never know when you’re going to get back here. So that’s one of the reasons I wanted to be in the game the other night. I don’t know how much longer I’m going to play. But I may not get to this spot again. So I’m going to try to do everything possible to get to that final game.”

This will be Oswalt’s sixth start against the Giants this year. They beat him three times during the regular season when he was with Houston. Oswalt pitched well in those games, but got no run support. He’s beaten San Francisco twice with the Phillies.

Hamels, the 2008 World Series MVP, is scheduled to start against Matt Cain on Sunday night if the Phillies survive their second straight do-or-die game. Hamels could even get the call at some point Saturday instead. (Source)

Juan Uribe hit a tiebreaking homer off Ryan Madson with two outs in the eighth inning and the San Francisco Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 Saturday night in Game 6 of the NL championship series to reach the World Series for the first time since 2002.

The pitching-rich Giants will host the Texas Rangers in Game 1 on Wednesday night.

Slumping Phillies slugger Ryan Howard looked at a called third strike with runners on first and second to end it.
