Microsoft’s most recent Windows version of the Microsoft Office System or Microsoft’s productivity suite is the Microsoft Office 2007. It was made available to retail customers on January 30, 2007. In this Office 2007 System, Microsoft decided to change the file extensions in which the old .DOC file format has now been replaced by .DOCX file format or .DOCM (Office Open XML) format.

With this, problem occur if you have an older version of Word 2000, XP/2002 or 2003 as it can’t be opened directly. What if someone emailed you with a file attachment of .docx and you only have Word 2000, XP/2002 or 2003?

Below are the ways on How to Open MS Word 2007 .docx File Without MS Office 2007 or without MS Office System:

1. To open Microsoft Office Word 2007 .docx or .docm files with you existing Microsoft Office Word 2003, Word 2002, or Word 2000 and if you have an internet connection, you need to download and install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system. By doing this, you can now open, edit some items, and save Office Word 2007 documents in previous versions of Word.

2. Or, buy and install an upgrade your Office Application, if you have enough cash to spend.

3. What If you do not have Word? These files can be a pain to open. What if you only have Open Office and internet connection? This is easy and free. The current version of Open Office will not properly open these files. But worry no more, the good folks at Google have a quick, easy and best of all useful method for us non Microsoft Office users to open and view Word 2007 .docx files by using Google Gmail and Google Docs to open it and even save the whole document to the previous version (or even other format).

Using Google Gmail Account:

You need a Google Gmail account. If you don’t have one, go to www.gmail.com and sign up. It is free and easy to open an account.

Email and attach all of your Office 2007 .docx. files to your Gmail address.

Click on “View as HTML”, which is located near the attachment in your email. This will convert the Word 2007 file into HTML, which can be viewed in Internet Explorer or Firefox. The formatting will be kept intact, so you will be able to read the document without any problems. The images will not be kept though.

Using Google Docs:

If you already have a Gmail or any Google accounts, you can use it to sign-in to your Google Docs account. If you don’t have one yet, just sign up.

After signing-in to Google Docs, click Upload located from the top bar menu.

Then Browse and select the file that you want to view then click Upload button.

It will now be opened immediately.

If you want to save the file to a previous or older version file format, go to the File Menu -> Download file as -> Word, then download the file to your PC.

So how’s your experience opening a .DOCX file format without Word 2007 or without Ms Office? I hope this helps.

If you have other ways on how to open .docx file other than the above mentioned, don’t hesitate to leave a comment here.

Right now, some bloggers and webmasters are integrating Adsense for search boxes on their websites so that their users can allow to search for keywords, articles or posts and at the same time earning a chance to get click revenue. But I have been asking myself (or maybe some out there are also wondering) if it is okay or fine to use our own Google Adsense for Search boxes to search keywords, articles or posts in our own site? The answer is yes, it is fine to use it as long as you don’t click on the Ads that appear in the results page. Does this violates Google’s program policies to perform searches in our own Adsense for search boxes? Google’s stand is NO, this doing and activity is not explicitly prohibited in their program policies.

But Google strongly advise not to use our Adsense for Search to search our own site for a couple of reasons. First, it can increase the chance of accidental or invalid clicks on the ads that appear on the search results pages. Second, this will inflate the number of queries in your reports, giving you an inaccurate picture of the activity on your site.

Just received an email from Google with a subject We are retiring AdSense Referrals

Email message below quoted:

Hello,

Thank you for participating in the AdSense Referrals program. We’re writing to let you know that we will be retiring the AdSense Referrals program during the last week of August. We appreciate your patience during this transition and here are some alternative options to consider:

* Google Affiliate Network: As part of the integration of DoubleClick, the DoubleClick Performics Affiliate Network will now operate as the Google Affiliate Network for advertisers targeting users located in the United States. Similar to the AdSense Referrals program, the Google Affiliate Network enables publishers
to apply for advertiser programs and get paid based on advertiser-defined actions instead of clicks or impressions. For further details, please visit: www.google.com/ads/affiliatenetwork.
* AdSense for content ads: If you have less than three AdSense for content ad units on a page, you may wish to replace the referral ad units with standard AFC ad units.

If you currently use referral ads, either to promote Google products or offerings from AdWords advertisers, AdSense Referrals code will no longer display ads beginning the last week of August. We encourage you to take the following steps before the product is retired:

* Remove the referral code from your site(s): Please take a moment to remove all referral code from your sites before the last week of August, so you can continue to effectively monetize your ad space.
* Run and save all referrals reports on your desktop: Create and save all reports related to the referrals program on your desktop, so you continue to have access to your valuable campaign information

Why is this happening?
We’re constantly looking for ways to improve AdSense by developing and supporting features which drive the best monetization results for our publishers. Sometimes, this requires retiring existing features so we can focus our efforts on the ones that will be most effective in the long term. For this reason, we will be retiring
the AdSense Referrals program. If you have any additional questions, please visit our Help Center:
http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/topic.py?topic=14882

Sincerely.

The Google AdSense Team

I hope Google Affiliate Network will be maximized by international members.

After Google Adsense Optimization Update, and for about 3 months of testing their Google Adsense’s sliding or scrolling text ads which we have seen and noticed sometime last December 2007, Adsense officially announced it in their blog yesterday April 2, 2008. And for the record, clicks on the ‘next’ and ‘previous’ buttons won’t generate earnings, but these buttons will help improve both advertiser value and your potential revenue. When users click on the buttons, they begin interacting with the ads and are more likely to find the specific offering they’re looking for, which can lead to higher earnings for you.

After months of testing, we’ve just updated our text ad format to include ‘next’ and ‘previous’ arrow buttons for cost-per-click (CPC) ads. When a user clicks on the ‘next’ button, an entirely new group of ads will appear in the ad unit, giving your users greater control over the ads they see and click.

While the ads the user initially sees may be relevant to a publisher’s content, they may not be precisely what the user is seeking — for example, a user may see ads about cheddar and brie cheese but would prefer more information about Swiss cheese. With the ‘next’ and ‘previous’ buttons, users can view more cheese ads until a Swiss cheese ad appears.

How about you Google Adsense publishers, what’s your take on this scrolling CPC text ads format?

Google Adsense update. The latest post on Google Adsense blog talks about “Another look at optimizations” which mentions two optimization guidelines for your site with Adsense Ads.

From Google Adsense blog:

We’ve given you many optimization tips over the years, and, as you know, it’s important to consider how your ad implementations affect not only your click-through rate, but your users’ and advertisers’ experience as well. To support this, we’d like to remind you of the following two guidelines when optimizing your site.
1. Ads shouldn’t be placed under a title or section heading in a way that implies that the ads are not ads.

For example, ads shouldn’t be placed under titles such as “Dallas Business Opportunities” or “Today’s Hot Deals”. Placing ads directly below titles such as these implies to your users that the links in the ads are publisher-created content. The example below shows a placement that does not follow this guideline.
2. Ads should be easily distinguishable from surrounding content.
Similarly, you should not place an ad unit by a group of links that has identical colors and line spacing. Doing so may cause users to think the ad unit is content created by you. In this situation, we recommend using a different color for the ad titles or indenting the ad unit to help distinguish the ads from your own content. This screenshot shows an implementation that does not follow this guideline:

As you can imagine, users who click on ads that they think are publisher-created content may lose trust in your site and decide not to return in the future. It’s important to keep their interests in mind, as well as your own.
Also, advertisers can tell which sites have a high conversion rate for them using Placement Performance reports. A conversion occurs when a click on an ad leads directly to user behavior that the advertiser deems valuable, such as a purchase, sign-up, page view, or lead. Advertisers have the option to exclude your site from their campaigns and may do so if it is not leading to conversions.
We believe these guidelines invest in the long-term health of the relationship between AdSense publishers, AdWords advertisers, and your sites’ visitors, and that they will help ensure your continued success in the AdSense program.

My take on this update

Yes, I have noticed that some blogs and web sites are implementing the ads below the post title. I am one of them too but my intention/purpose is not to make it look like the ads or links are publisher-created content. But I guess Google is thinking the other way around. From now on, I will follow Google’s guidelines so that I would no longer have problems in the future with my ads. So, I am changing the alignment of my Google Adsense ads by using the left/right alignment or by wrapping it from my post now and also placing one at the bottom of each of my single posts so that my guests, readers and visitors can clearly make out that they are really ads. Thanks to Marhgil for the heads up.

I am wondering when will Google is going to seriously implement these guidelines to blogs and websites. Will they penalised them right away in anyway or advise them to change the positioning? How about you, what’s your take on this?

My web host blocked my site for about an hour because of the traffic surge it encountered and is using above the 10% limit for cpu resources. Good thing, Eugene is kind and helpful enough in unblocking my site and allowed me to fix my site by deactivating some plugins and by using the temporary default wordpress theme for the mean time so as to lessen the use of wordpress plugins. Before my site was blocked, I have monitored that there are around 200-300 guests/visitors accessing my site simultaneously. Wow my first time to experience such surge of traffic. Had I known and change my theme, earlier before the fight, to a simpler default wordpress theme, maybe my site could have handled the surge of traffic smoothly. Just maybe

Anyways, back to blogging and back to my normal and original theme again by wpthemesplugin.com. Holy week is here. How will you celebrate it?
