US Open 2009: Serena Williams vs Kim Clijsters

World No. 2 Serena Williams takes on Kim Clijsters of Belgium tonight in a U.S. Open Women’s Singles semifinal match.

With Melanie Oudin (USA) already gone after losing in the quarterfinals to Caroline Wozniacki, Serena Williams is the only American player left in the singles draw, both men and women, in this year’s US Open Tennis Tournament.

Notes about the Kim Clijsters vs Serena Williams semifinal is that both players come into the match-up with a 12 match Flushing Meadows singles winning streak.  Serena Williams is the defending champion with 7 victories in last year’s US Open and with 5 victories so far in this year’s US Open.  Clijsters last played in the US Open in 2005, a tournament that she won, and since she did not play at Flushing Meadows in 2006, 2007, or 2008, her current 12 match winning streak is also still active.

Head to head, Serena Williams has never really had any trouble with Clijsters, especially on the hard court.  Straight up, Williams has a sharp lead in their series at 7-1 while Clijsters sole victory over Williams came on carpet in the 2002 WTA Championships final.  On hard courts however, the same surface that the US Open is played on, Serena is a perfect 7-0 against Clijsters.

Will this be a close match? The last time the two played each other was in 2003. They will again meet today September 11, 2009 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Kim Clijsters easily cruised to the 2009 US Open Finals by beating No. 2 Serena Williams 6-4, 7-5 Saturday night that ended when the defending champion was docked a point for yelling at an official who called a foot fault. Williams already had been given a code violation warning when she broke her racket after losing the first set.

Clijsters will be facing Caroline Wozniacki tomorrow September 13th 4:30PM. Wozniacki defeated Yanina Wickmayer 6-3, 6-3 in the other semifinal match.
