US Open 2009: Rafael Nadal vs Fernando Gonzalez

Rafael Nadal will play against Chilean 11th seed Fernando Gonzalez for a spot in the semifinals. The match will be played tonight 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm ET Thursday, September 10, 2009 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Flushing Meadows, New York.

Fernando Gonzalez and Rafael Nadal’s most famous match took place in the quarterfinal of the 2007 Australian Open at a time when Gonzalez was blasting everyone off of the court.  While he took Nadal out in that quarterfinal in straight sets, Gonzalez has failed to take even one set off of Nadal since.

Nadal has beaten Gonzalez in 6 of 9 previous matches but the recent history is probably what is more important.  Nadal has a 5 match winning streak going against Gonzalez and Nadal has won 12 consecutive sets against the Chilean.

Coming back to the tour from injury, Nadal still hasn’t beaten a top 10 player.  Nadal’s last match, a 4 set victory over Gael Monfils 6-7, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 in the 4th round, speaks volumes to Nadal’s ability right now, which due to his injury, had been a big question mark in this Slam.

But Nadal looks good to continue his winning streak over Gonzalez and to advance to the semifinals and play the winner of Thursday’s first match between Del Potro vs Cilic. UPDATE: Del Potro is has just advanced via a 4 set victory against Cilic 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1.

Still, it will all come down to execution.

UPDATE 3: After 2 days of canceled sessions, Rafael Nadal has reached the U.S. Open semifinals for the second year in a row by finishing a rain-interrupted victory over Fernando Gonzalez. The No. 3-seeded Rafael Nadal defeated No. 11 Fernando Gonzalez in 3 straight sets 7-6(4), 7-6(2), 6-0 and barges into semifinals against Juan Martin Del Potro.
