US Open 2009 Womens Singles Finals: Kim Clijsters vs Caroline Wozniacki

2005 US Open champion Kim Clijsters takes on No. 9 seed Caroline Wozniacki Sunday night 9PM September 13th in the 2009 U.S. Open Women’s Singles Finals match.

The 26-year-old Belgian Clijsters advanced to her third US Open final by defeating defending champion Serena Williams in their semifinal match, 6-4, 7-5, after Williams loses control due to Foot Fault called and was then penalized for a point penalty on match point.  It was a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct.

“It’s unfortunate that a match that I was playing so well had to end that way,” said Clijsters. “To this point I’m a little confused about what happened out there just because I was so focused trying to win that last point. Then things ended up ending a little bit different than I expected.”

Caroline Wozniacki advances to her first career Grand Slam final with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Wickmayer late Saturday night. It was not the cleanest victory with nine breaks of serve in the rain-delayed match.

The 19-year-old Wozniacki used her great speed to cover the entire court and played outstanding defense, catching up to ball after ball that Wickmayer sprayed around the court. The Dane did what she does best against Yanina Wickmayer.

“I’m in the US Open final. I cannot describe it with words. I’m so excited,” Wozniacki said. “I’m so happy I pulled it through today. I’m really looking forward to it. It’s a dream come true to play the finals of a Grand Slam, and now I’m here.”

Some experts say that Clijsters, the 2005 US Open champion, entered this contest as the favorite, because she’s been here before and has showed during this tournament that she is perhaps more composed than ever. Her defensive to offensive skills have been unmatched, she’s serving hard and locating her balls with precision and she’s running everything down in sight. Her once spotty forehand is much more dependable now and her backhand down the line has been exquisite. She’s held her nerve, just like she did four years go when she outlasted Venus, Sharapova and Mary Piece for the title.
