US Open 2009: Roger Federer vs Novak Djokovic

World No. 1 Roger Federer will be facing against No. 4th-seed Novak Djokovic for a spot in the US Open 2009 Finals. This Semifinal match will be played today 4:30PM ET Sunday September 13, 2009 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Flushing Meadows, New York.

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic have been playing each other at the US Open many times now. They have been there and done that. This is the third straight year they have met in New York and this semifinals match today will be their 6th meeting since the 2008 Australian Open.

In those 6 meetings, the record between the familiar foes is an even 3-3 (and 8-4 in Federer’s favor in their total meetings) but in Flushing Meadows, it has been the world No. 1 Federer who has come out on top. Their first meeting at the US Open was the 2007 final – which was Djokovic’s first career Grand Slam final – a match Federer won in straight sets for the title. They met again last year in the semifinals, which Federer won in four sets on his way to his fifth straight US Open title.

Both players know just what the other will bring to the table when they meet today. Federer and Djokovic have been playing some of their best tennis in New York. Neither player has been pushed to five sets and they each have been pushed to four sets only twice.

Roger Federer beat Novak Djokovic in 3 close sets 7-6(3), 7-5, 7-5 and is now just one victory away from becoming the first man since Bill Tilden to win 6 straight US Open titles. Federer will play No. 6 Juan Martin del Potro in the US Open 2009 Men’s Singles finals Monday night. Earlier in the day, Del Potro defeated Rafael Nadal to make his first Grand Slam final.

World No. 1 Federer won his 40th straight match at Flushing Meadows. He has now reached the final of 17 of the last 18 Grand Slam tournaments. Federer punctuated the victory Sunday with a winner, hit backward between his legs, to set up match point.
