US Open 2009: Juan Martin Del Potro vs Marin Cilic
Juan Martin Del Potro will face Marin Cilic today 3:30 pm ET Thursday, September 10, 2009 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Flushing Meadows, New York for a spot in the semifinals and will have the chance to play in the semis against Nadal vs Gonzalez winner.
This will be Cilic’s first grand slam quarter-final match.
This is a battle of the giants between Del Potro and Cilic taking place on tonight as both men stand at 6’6 and take full advantage of their towering frames, with two of the toughest serves to handle in the men’s game for different reasons. Both, Del Potro and Cilic, possess fearsome accuracy and the ability to find angles unavailable to shorter men but while Del Potro’s delivery is more about sheer pace, it’s Cilic’s variety and heavy topspin which causes opponents problems.
Del Potro is racking up some impressive ace stats so far, 22 in the last round against Ferrero. While Cilic’s win against Murray was on points on his second serve which tells a lot of the story.
Del Potro has the edge against Cilic as he won the only previous match 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in the last sixteen of the Australian Open. Del Potro also had the better season with two titles, a first grand slam semi-final and a masters final in Montreal.
UPDATE:
Juan Martin del Potro has advanced to his second Grand Slam semifinal with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Marin Cilic at the 2009 U.S. Open. After dropping the first set against No. 16 Cilic, Del Potro won 17 of the final 20 games. He will play the winner of the tonight’s later match between Rafael Nadal and Fernando Gonzalez.
